Propane information related to forklifts, warehousing, and energy savings

Refueling

Safe, Quick and Easy

Propane forklifts can be refueled by a simple cylinder change or from a bulk fuel tank. Local propane marketers often provide cylinder exchange programs that deliver filled cylinders to the work site. One full 33-lb. propane tank will last approximately 8 hours, depending on use. Propane refueling stations with state-of-the-art safety features can also be conveniently installed onsite.

Compared to other forklift refueling options, propane can be refilled safely, quickly, and easily:

  • Unlike CNG forklifts, which need to be refueled after 2-4 hours of operation, or electric forklifts, which require 8-10 hours of recharging time, propane forklifts can provide consistent power around the clock with as little as five minutes' refueling time.
  • The sealed fuel system of propane forklifts enhances plant safety.
  • Fuel cylinders and carburetion components meet or exceed strict national code specifications.
  • Propane gas operates under an average pressure of 100-200 psi compared with CNG's much higher pressure of 3,000-3,600 psi.

Comparison of Forklift Refueling Requirments

FuelFuel StorageRefueling ProcedureRefueling Time
Propane• Requires moderately pressurized storage tanks which can be located outdoors
• Easy to service
• Propane is non toxic and does not contaminate water or soil
• Simple, safe, non-toxic liquid transfer
• Immediate operation
Less than 5 minutes
Diesel• Toxic fuel - EPA storage regulations apply (40CFR280) • Potential for toxic hazardous spillage during refueling Less than 5 minutes
CNG• Requires tanks at extremely high pressure (3,000 - 3,600 psi)
• EPA regulations do not apply to storage
• Tanks require recertification
• Time consuming, costly refueling procedure
• Electrical power required to operate compressor (loss of productivity with power outage)
Fast fill: 4-7 minutes
Slow fill: 8 hours
Electricity• Battery and caustic acid storage
• Indoor storage space required
• Documented battery disposal required
• Time consuming, costly recharging procedure (labor costs for changing batteries)
• Limited battery life
8-10 hours
Gasoline• Complex storage
• Toxic fuel - EPA storage regulations apply (40CFR280)
• Potential for toxic hazardous spillage during refueling, low flash point Less than 5 minutes
