Propane, also known as LPG (liquefied petroleum gas), is the leading alternative fuel in the country. It is also the nation's third most common vehicular fuel today, after gasoline and diesel. There are over 270,000 on-road vehicles in the United States and more than 10 million worldwide that operate on propane (Source: US Department of Energy, World LP Gas Association). A large number of these are used in fleets that include light-to heavy-duty trucks, buses, taxicabs, police cars, and rental and delivery vehicles.

The number of propane vehicles in use in the United States has been rising steadily since 1995 (see chart). Click here for a more detailed breakdown of propane vehicles by state, according to the Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center.

New Online Fleet Calculator

The new Fleet Calculator is designed to assist the industry in comparing the cost of propane-powered vehicles versus gasoline/diesel vehicles. This tool helps potential customers understand the financial benefits of switching to propane, especially with new propane products available or soon to be on the market (GM 8.1-L engine platform, Roush/F-150 and Blue Bird school bus programs, and numerous aftermarket systems available) combined with the alternative fuel tax credits. The Fleet Calculator is an interactive tool providing marketers and customers with hard numbers to demonstrate the savings realized by driving propane-powered vehicles. To make the Fleet Calculator practical for marketers, the worksheet results can be printed and/or emailed to the user.
