As one of the cleanest burning of all alternative fuels, propane is an approved, alternative clean fuel under the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPAct) and the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. Congress passed EPAct to accelerate the use of alternative fuels in the transportation sector. With EPAct in place, the Department of Energy's (DOE) primary goals are to decrease the nation's dependence on foreign oil and increase energy security through the use of domestically produced alternative fuels. The DOE's overall mission is to replace 10 percent of petroleum-based motor fuels by the year 2000 and 30 percent by the year 2010. EPAct mandates that federal, state, and alternative fuel provider fleets purchase alternative fuel vehicles.
Propane has been lauded as an environmentally friendly alternative fuel. The U.S. Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) reports that propane has 60 percent less combined carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide emissions than reformulated gasoline. Today, propane is the preferred energy source for school buses in Oregon, taxis in Las Vegas, and police cars, fleet vehicles, and shuttle vans in numerous other communities.
Propane Trucks
Currently, Ford offers propane-powered versions of the 2001 F-Series Super Duty truck and the 2001 F-150 Series. The F-Series Super Duty is a full-size truck that runs on either propane or reformulated gasoline. It is available in F-350, F-450, and F-550 chassis cabs in 4x2 or 4x4, as well as regular and crew cab models.
Like the F-Series, the F-150 Series pickup has two separate fuel systems, allowing it to run on either propane or gasoline. The F-Series bi-fuel propane is offered in the F-150 regular or supercab 4x2 or 4x4 with 770# payload group. Short box (supercab) or long (regular cab) configurations are available.
Chevrolet/General Motors will also be introducing a medium-duty truck in the near future.

Propane Vans
The Propane Promotion Consortium, Inc., (ProCon) and QUANTUM Technologies, Inc., are developing and certifying dedicated-propane General Motors full-size passenger and cargo vans. QUANTUM will design, develop, validate, certify, and produce the propane vans as a dual-invoice program. ProCon members and QUANTUM will market the vehicles through select GM dealers nationwide.
