Propane Provides Reliable Supplemental Power and Heat for Biodigesters

Project Reports

Mid-Atlantic Propane Assisted Biodigester: Technical and Economic Feasibility Assessment

Nutrient management is a method of managing farm waste – one of the largest concerns of growing livestock confinement operations and other types of agriculture. As a clean burning, energy-rich fuel, propane is an excellent fuel source for this type of technology.

Nutrient Management research develops technologies that help farmers maintain proper management of waste materials. These materials are often rich in valuable nutrients that can support or enhance other agricultural production.

Projects

LP Gas Incinerator Follow-On Work (Docket 12346)
Follow-up work based on recommendations from ADEPT's previous incinerator study (Docket 12028). Survey of major U.S. incinerator manufacturers to determine how to maximize the success of LP Gas fueled incinerators; an in-depth assessment on a previous West Virginia DOA portable LP Gas incinerator project; and close monitoring of regulations pertinent to animal carcass disposal.

Mid-Atlantic Propane Assisted Biodigester Project (Docket 12046)
Technical and economic feasibility study of propane-fueled assistance for agricultural biodigesters to provide facility electrical power and excess electrical power back to the grid. Development of the information necessary to support a commercial scale hybrid-power, distributed energy demonstration project involving this concept.
Project Report

LP Gas Portable Incinerator Research Study (Docket 12028)
Quantification of the potential market for propane-fueled portable animal carcass incineration systems and production of a design that can accommodate both small- and large-scale livestock disposal situations. Review of animal disposal research, quantification of current practices in U.S. and abroad, identification of leading technology available and in use, and summarization of the regulations that govern animal disposal.

Anaerobic Digestion Using Propane as a Fuel Supplement (Docket 12027)
Demonstration of a digestion process that uses acidogenic and methanogenic bacteria to convert greenwaste and foodwaste to biogas and hydrogen while removing all or nearly all of the waste stream's organic materials.
