Locomotive

R&D Activities > Engine Fuel > Locomotive

Locomotives, particularly those used for long-haul freight purposes, require a fuel that provides a great deal of energy for a long period of time. Propane not only has a high energy density, but it is also clean-burning, enabling it to meet the needs of locomotive applications in a low-emissions manner.

Locomotive research investigates and assesses the technical and market feasibility of using propane engines in locomotive applications.

Projects

LPG Locomotive Technical Feasibility and Quantitative Market Study (Docket 10752)
Evaluation of technical and economic feasibility, environmental benefits, and U.S. market potential for propane-fueled locomotives.
