Engine and Vehicle Demonstration

R&D Activities > Engine Fuel > Engine and Vehicle Demonstration

Demonstrating propane engines and vehicles provides real-world tests to determine the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of utilizing propane-fueled engines and vehicles for everyday use. Evidence of using propane engines and vehicles successfully outside of a laboratory setting supports the widespread use of propane as an engine fuel.

Engine and vehicle demonstration research demonstrates vehicles and engines (bus, truck, etc.) that burn propane fuel, analyzing their performance in real-world settings such as National Parks.

Projects

Blue Bird Propane Vision Demonstration Program (Docket 12464)
Placement of six Blue Bird propane-fueled demonstration school buses in targeted markets across the country. Continuation of work with states to hold more "Road Show" events featuring Blue Bird buses based on successful Texas Road Show model.

Propane Pickup Truck Demonstration and Promotion in the Agriculture Market (Docket 12341)
Demonstration and promotion of new Roush F-150 Ford propane-powered pickup truck. Targeted marketing to agricultural producers and others charged with the responsibility to purchase fleets of vehicles that meet federal and state clean air standards. Includes industry outreach events, public relations, and other promotional activities. Cross-promotion with other propane agriculture innovations (i.e., propane mower, cotton defoliator, tankless water heaters, etc.) where appropriate.

Department of Energy (DOE) Grant Funding Partnership (Docket 11655)
Commitment from the DOECC to provide $100,000 in matching funds for propane engine development projects.

Mammoth Cave National Park Propane Project (Docket 10847)
Appeal for funding to install a propane refueling system for buses at Mammoth Cave National Park. Conversion from gasoline to propane of school busses used in transporting visitors.

LPG Emissions Deterioration Factor Project (Docket 10319)
Development of propane-specific deterioration factors for engines for EPA publication CD-95-14. Includes defining factors for at least 15 light-duty engine families based on actual emissions testing.

Propane Vehicle Demo. Grant Program (Docket 10186)

Search for vehicle demonstration projects to promote propane as an over-the-road fuel. Leveraging of funds to complete grants including converting school buses to propane, establishment of Arizona propane fueling infrastructure, conversion of airline ground support equipment to propane engines, and purchasing of light-duty propane-fueled trucks for use in Massachusetts Department of Forests and Parks.

Vehicle Development & Demonstration (Docket 10026)
Search for vehicle demonstration projects to promote propane as an over-the-road fuel and leveraging of other funds to sell new propane gallons and develop two stationary propane engines.
